I’m a huge fan of Katamari Damacy, and have been for a long time. A few years ago, though, I had a vision for an animated short video to explain the introduction to that game. The idea was that it would be something like “Behind the Music” for games. Basically, it went something like this:

INT. NAMCO OFFICE – MID-DAY The project team discusses the final details of the project plan for the upcoming game, Katamari Damacy. They’re assigning roles, and the manager gets a bright idea.
TEAM MEMBER 1
I think that’s about it, sir. The only thing we haven’t discussed is the theme to the game.
MANAGER
Yeah, I’ve been thinking about that. I think we need to get Jones in on this one.
TEAM MEMBER 2
(surprised) Jones, Sir? Are you sure?
MANAGER
Yes. He worked Kojima on the first Metal Gear game. I think he can bring something to the table.

INT. DARK ROOM
A phone is ringing, and the only person in the room is Jones, a filthy character in a clown costume and makeup.
JONES
(answering the phone)
Hello? Yeah. Huh? Ball game?
(slouches)
Alright.
(hangs up).
(Pulls out a kit with needles and begins preparing an injection).
Looks like it’s going to be another Psycho Mantis.
(He injects something into his arm, and as his eyes roll back into his head, the opening video for Katamari Damacy begins to play).
Call me crazy, but this seems to me to be the only possible explanation for that opening sequence. There had to be some crazy drugs and possibly a sensory deprivation chamber involved. It may have even included some of Joey Diaz’s banana bread.
