I’ve been really getting into Kickstarter lately; I even contributed to a new game console’s Kickstarter. No, this isn’t going to be the greatest, most high-end machine. In fact, it’s going the opposite direction; it’s going to be an android-based console. Here is some more information about it.
This may be apocryphal, but one of the things that I heard about the old Nintendo 64 was that it was difficult to program for, and this ultimately led to less than optimal content. Thus, when they brought out the GameCube (and every subsequent system since), they went in the opposite direct. That is, they built the system to be one generation behind, but made it much easier for content developers to develop games.
Again, it don’t know if that is true, but it seems like the direction that the Ouya team is taking. The marketplace for Android apps is pretty robust, and there are a lot of independent content developers just waiting for an opportunity to make a console title. I think the Ouya will give them that opportunity. Even if they fail, the fact that they are trying is worth my contribution and support.
