Quick note: After some reflection, I’ve come to realize that, if everything I write this month is as long as the BioShock review AND I have to make an image for every entry, I’ll never get through this A to Z challenge. For this reason, and for the remaining games, I am going to do less of a review and more of summary of my feelings on the game.
CaveStory+ is a 2D side-scrolling platform game based on the freeware game CaveStory, and is available on Steam. The original game had 320×240 graphics and was released in 2004.
In CaveStory+, you run, jump, and shoot to win in class Mario or Megaman style. This game has slightly different controls, though, with your lateral movement actually working faster than gravity. This allows for lot, arcing jumps onto platforms, but takes a little time to get used to.
In this story, you awaken in a dark cave with no memory, and only little vignettes to feed you information about your character and the world around you. The dialog is relatively smooth, and it allows you to accelerate the text without necessarily skipping it. This is in start contrast to games like Okami that have chatty dialog that you must either slowly read or skip.
This game is definitely a retro flashback that puts me back in my Commodore 64 days. On the whole, I find it to be a nice, light game that deserves to be completed. At the end of this month (probably after beating Bioshock), this is a game that I will definitely return to, and I encourage you to do the same.
When you can start using your gun to propel and hover you, the pacing of the game seemed to accelerate as well to make a brilliant ending.
